There are short stories and novels. Short stories generally last few pages. Novels last a couple of 100 pages. There is a reason why short stories are small. They have a core message that can be communicated best through few sharp phrases.
The Dilemma is what you get when someone decides to take a short story and decides to make it into a novel as long as Atlas Shrugged.
As a result, the core Dilemma that the viewer feels is whether to run out or walk out from the movie 15 minutes into it. Was it a symbolic gesture to keep it 2 minutes short of 2 hours?

Protege
Let me try to get this going again..
Saw a good one after a long time. Highlights the impact of drugs and the perspectives of sellers, users and their family.
Held me captive till the end. It hardly mattered that the language was Japanese. A true story needs now words.
Story in a snippet:
Story of an undercover policeman working hard at breaking a well established drug cartel. He befriends a lady staying next door along with her small kid. He becomes close to the local baron, and in fact works his way up to being his successor. The lady friend turns out to be a junkie, and is often pursued by her husband who also seems to be a small dealer. He finally overcomes any hesitation in turning his mentor in. The last straw was the death of the lady friend through a drug overdose.
Two moments remain with me.
1. The lady screaming in frustration that she wants to kick the habit, but that nobody who becomes an addict ever will!
2. The baron justifying the drug sales as being like any other business. He couldn't meet the Protege's eyes while he was saying it. The implication and the justification was beautifully captured.
+: Gripping story, great direction
-: Cant think of any..this is a good one.
4 out of 5.

Shrek the Third
Second movie that we tried with Sidharth (the first was Spidey 3).
Had read the review which said there was not much of a story.
The review was wrong...there was no story at all.
A mishmash created to extend the marketing of shrek merchandise.
My two year old son walked out of the movie hall in about 30 minutes....we followed.
Rating: 1 out of 5
Story in a snippet: Like I said, what story??
+: Eddy Murphey still evokes some laughter out of donkey
-: Everything else; But the most morbid touch was Rapunzel on a wig!!!

Chinatown
Starting today, trying to jot down the movies I see. Could also act as a personal memoir as to the pulp I have churned through during my life time.
Chinatown: Holds your attention. However, I felt disappointed at the end. Not the kind of ending I would have like to see. I am sure critics will disagree, though.
Rating: 3 out of 5
Story in a snippet: Story of a private detective trying to solve a murder. It turns out that there is more to it than meets the eye. Basically, it is a rich guy plotting to buy all the land in a barren valley and then irrigating it to make the land fertile and himself richer. Sadly, he succeeds in the end.
+: Jack Nicholson's acting, though the patched nose is irritating after a couple of scenes. His expression on seeing Faye dead is awesome.
-: Ending. All that time spent to learn that bad does win.
