Protege

Let me try to get this going again..

Saw a good one after a long time. Highlights the impact of drugs and the perspectives of sellers, users and their family.

Held me captive till the end. It hardly mattered that the language was Japanese. A true story needs now words.

Story in a snippet:
Story of an undercover policeman working hard at breaking a well established drug cartel. He befriends a lady staying next door along with her small kid. He becomes close to the local baron, and in fact works his way up to being his successor. The lady friend turns out to be a junkie, and is often pursued by her husband who also seems to be a small dealer. He finally overcomes any hesitation in turning his mentor in. The last straw was the death of the lady friend through a drug overdose.

Two moments remain with me.
1. The lady screaming in frustration that she wants to kick the habit, but that nobody who becomes an addict ever will!
2. The baron justifying the drug sales as being like any other business. He couldn't meet the Protege's eyes while he was saying it. The implication and the justification was beautifully captured.

+: Gripping story, great direction

-: Cant think of any..this is a good one.

4 out of 5.
